Genetics & origin

Where does the Cali Kush strain come from?

Cali Kush comes from a cross of Purps and L.A. Confidential, two California indicas; Sumo Seeds is the earliest known seller, under the name California Kush. SeedFinder traces Purps to mostly indica US stock and lists L.A. Confidential as OG LA Affie × Afghani. Strain sites often call the Purps parent Mendocino Purps, the purple-tinged cut it is usually linked to.

Sumo Seeds has since dropped the strain, and Sensible Seeds now sells a Cali Kush made from the same Purps × L.A. Confidential pairing. The name is popular, though: Anesia Seeds, 00 Seeds and MSNL all sell different plants called Cali Kush or California Kush with unrelated parents, so compare genetics before you compare specs.

Why do some Cali Kush buds turn purple?

Cali Kush can show blue or purple tones because its Purps parent carries purple-pigment genetics. SeedFinder describes Sumo's California Kush as a plant with blue and purple coloring that starts thin and then fills into dense flowers. AllBud describes finished buds as dense, olive-green and grape-shaped with orange hairs, so color varies from plant to plant.

Cool nights bring out the color. A drop of a few degrees in the dark period during late flowering makes purple hues more likely, but it does not change potency.

Effects, aroma & terpenes

What does Cali Kush taste like, and how does it feel?

Aroma and flavor

Cali Kush tastes of sweet berry and sour citrus over an earthy Kush base, with a coffee-like note on the finish and, on some plants, a light grape or mint aftertaste.

  • Berry
  • Sour citrus
  • Coffee
  • Earthy Kush
  • Grape
  • Spice

Terpenes

Myrcene
Earthy, musky fruit; the base of the Kush smell
Caryophyllene
Peppery spice that matches its coffee-and-spice notes
Limonene
Sour, bright citrus on the nose

Leafly lists these three terpenes for Cali Kush; exact shares change between growers and batches.

Reported effects

Cali Kush is usually reported as relaxing and happy, with a euphoric start that eases into a calm body feel without being as heavy as a pure indica. Leafly users add hunger and sleepiness late in the session, while AllBud reviewers describe a more upbeat, creative side, which fits its near-balanced genetics.

  • Relaxed
  • Euphoric
  • Happy
  • Hungry
  • Sleepy

Cali Kush's usual downsides are dry mouth and dry eyes, and one AllBud reviewer found the smoke a little harsh.

We drew these Cali Kush reports from Weedmaps, Leafly and AllBud user reviews. People react differently, and nothing here is medical advice.

Grow guide

How do you grow Cali Kush seeds?

Cali Kush seeds are easy to grow: veg the plants for 3 to 5 weeks, keep them compact with a Sea of Green or light topping, change the lights to 12/12, and harvest after about 7 to 9 weeks of flowering.

  1. GerminateAbout 1 week

Cali Kush seeds usually sprout within a few days; move seedlings to small pots and keep light gentle for the first week.

  2. Vegetate3–5 weeks indoors

Its short indica frame suits a Sea of Green, so many small plants with a short veg fill a tent quickly.

  3. Flower7–9 weeks

After the 12/12 change, Cali Kush stretches only modestly. Buds may start thin before filling out in the second half of bloom.

  4. HarvestDay ~53–63 indoors · early October outdoors

Harvest when most trichomes look milky; leave a few extra days if you want more amber and a heavier effect.

Grow tips for Cali Kush

  • Use its short height. At around 1 m, Cali Kush fits low tents and closets, and SeedFinder lists Sumo's version at only 40 to 90 cm.
  • Give early buds time. Cali Kush flowers can look airy in the first weeks of bloom and then bulk up late, so don't judge the yield too early.
  • Cool the nights for color. The Purps side can show blue and purple hues when late-flower nights run a few degrees cooler than days.
  • Thin the inner leaves. Dense Kush buds need airflow; removing a few inner fan leaves in mid-flower lowers the risk of mold.
  • Plan an early-October finish outdoors. Outdoors in the Northern Hemisphere, Cali Kush is ready from late September to early October, ahead of most autumn rain.
