5.00 out of 5 · 6 reviews

The AK-47 strain is the 1992 Serious Seeds hybrid that breeder Simon built from Colombian, Mexican, Thai and Afghan stock, and one of the most decorated plants in cannabis. It leans sativa at about 65%, yet it finishes in a short 8 to 9 weeks with compact, resin-coated buds and a loud, sweet smell. These feminized seeds grow female photoperiod plants for tents, hydro systems and gardens with a dry fall.

Quick answer

What is the AK-47 strain?

AK-47 is a sativa-dominant hybrid (about 65% sativa, 35% indica) that Simon of Serious Seeds bred in 1992 from Colombian, Mexican, Thai and Afghan genetics. The exact parent plants remain a breeder's secret. AK-47 flowers in 8 to 9 weeks indoors, which is quick for a sativa, and reported THC runs from about 15% to 22%; an independent lab measured 21.5% on a sample entered in the 1999 Cannabis Cup. Its compact, resin-heavy buds carry a strong sweet, spicy and citrus smell.

Genetics & origin

Where does the AK-47 strain come from?

AK-47 was bred in 1992 by Simon, the owner and breeder of Serious Seeds, after he tested thousands of plants grown from Colombian, Mexican, Thai and Afghan seed stock. He has never published the exact parent plants, so the pedigree is best read as three sativa landrace lines meeting one Afghan indica. Serious Seeds calls the result an F1 hybrid that is mostly sativa in growth yet finishes on a schedule closer to an indica.

Simon has said the name has nothing to do with violence; it points to the strain's reputation as a one-hit wonder. AK-47 then collected cup prizes for more than two decades, including second place among sativas at the 1999 High Times Cannabis Cup, first place for hash at the 2005 High Life Cup in Barcelona and third place among hybrids at the 2011 Cup in Amsterdam. Serious Seeds now counts 27 awards and notes that many other breeders have worked AK-47 into their own crosses.

How do feminized AK-47 seeds compare with regular ones?

In Serious Seeds' own side-by-side grow report, feminized AK-47 plants grew shorter, gave slightly more bud per plant and took about a week longer to finish than plants from regular seed. The feminized group reached 65–85 cm against 85–102 cm for the regulars, averaged about 103 g of dried flower per plant against 91 g, and was harvested around day 69 instead of day 63. Both groups shared the same room, soil mix and 600 W lamps.

One trial is a guide, not a rule. These numbers come from a single breeder grow report with a handful of plants, so read them as what feminized AK-47 can do under good conditions.

Effects, aroma & terpenes

What does AK-47 taste like, and how does it feel?

Aroma and flavor

AK-47 smells sweet and spicy, with citrus, earthy and woody tones and, in the breeder's trial, a faint sandalwood note in the smoke. The odor in late flower is far louder than the fairly mild, sweet taste of the finished buds.

Terpenes

Myrcene
Earthy, musky base; ranked first for AK-47 on Leafly
Pinene
Fresh pine and a sharp herbal edge
Caryophyllene
Peppery spice behind the sweetness

Serious Seeds publishes no terpene lab data for AK-47, so this order follows Leafly's averages and will shift between plants.

Reported effects

AK-47 is usually described as a long-lasting high that feels clear and euphoric in the head while the body loosens up. Weedmaps users most often tag it happy, uplifted and relaxed, and AllBud reviewers add creative and sociable. Leafly calls its effects mostly energizing, while Simon describes a calmer finish, so expect some spread between plants and people.

  • Happy
  • Uplifted
  • Relaxed
  • Creative

AK-47's reported downsides include dry mouth and dry eyes, and some SeedFinder reviewers describe feeling fidgety or couch-locked after a heavy session.

These AK-47 notes combine user reports from Leafly, Weedmaps, AllBud and SeedFinder with the breeder's description. People respond differently, and nothing here is medical advice.

Grow guide

How do you grow AK-47 seeds?

AK-47 feminized seeds are an easy grow: give them a short veg of 2.5 to 4 weeks, let the main stem build one big central cola, flower them for 8 to 9 weeks under 12/12, and plan ahead for a very strong smell. The plants keep a Christmas-tree shape, stay medium-sized and do well in soil or hydro.

  1. Germinate3–7 days

Sprout AK-47 seeds in a warm, moist medium and move the seedlings under gentle light once the first leaves open.

  2. Vegetate2.5–4 weeks

Serious Seeds recommends a short veg for AK-47. The plants grow a natural Christmas-tree shape, so many growers leave the top untouched.

  3. Flower8–9 weeks

After the change to 12/12, AK-47 sets compact, resinous buds with few leaves; have a carbon filter running before week three.

  4. HarvestDay ~60–69 indoors · mid–late Oct outdoors

Feminized plants in the breeder's trial were ready around day 69. Cut when most trichomes have turned cloudy.

Grow tips for AK-47

  • Keep the main cola. Serious Seeds notes that growers usually leave AK-47's top in place to build one large central bud, so topping is optional rather than essential.
  • Take the smell seriously. Simon warns of an extremely strong odor in flower. A properly sized carbon filter and a sealed tent matter more with AK-47 than with most strains.
  • Try it in hydro. The breeder reports strong results from AK-47 in hydroponic systems, where its short veg keeps each cycle quick.
  • Allow a few extra days. Feminized AK-47 can need up to a week longer than regular seed. Weedmaps mentions the extra week, and the breeder's feminized trial plants finished near day 69.
  • Start feeding from the breeder's numbers. The breeder's trial grew AK-47 in soil at pH 6.0–6.3 with EC kept at 2.0 mS or below, a useful baseline for your own schedule.
  • Mind the October finish. Outdoors, AK-47 ripens in mid to late October in the Northern Hemisphere, so it suits regions where fall stays dry; Serious Seeds mentions good results in Spain.

FAQ

AK-47 strain FAQ

Is AK-47 indica or sativa?

AK-47 is a sativa-dominant hybrid, about 65% sativa and 35% indica according to Serious Seeds and AllBud. It combines three sativa landrace lines from Colombia, Mexico and Thailand with an Afghan indica, which helps explain why it finishes faster than most sativas.

Who bred AK-47?

Simon of Serious Seeds bred AK-47 in 1992 after testing thousands of plants from Colombian, Mexican, Thai and Afghan seed stock. He has kept the exact parent plants secret, and Serious Seeds still offers its own AK-47 line in feminized and regular form.

Why is it called AK-47?

Simon has said the AK-47 name has nothing to do with violence. It refers to the strain's reputation as a one-hit wonder, meaning a single puff was said to be plenty. Sellers also write it as AK47 or shorten it to AK.

How much THC does AK-47 have?

Reported THC for AK-47 runs from about 13% on AllBud to 22% on Weedmaps, and Leafly lists 19%. An independent lab measured 21.5% THC on an AK-47 entry at the 1999 Cannabis Cup, which Serious Seeds says was the highest result that year. CBD is low.

How long does AK-47 take to flower?

AK-47 flowers in about 8 to 9 weeks (53 to 63 days) indoors once the lights go to 12/12. Feminized plants can take up to a week longer; in the breeder's trial they were ready around day 69. Outdoors in the Northern Hemisphere, AK-47 finishes in mid to late October.

How tall does AK-47 grow?

AK-47 is a medium-height plant with a Christmas-tree shape. In Serious Seeds' indoor trial, feminized plants reached 65–85 cm (2.1–2.8 ft) and regular plants 85–102 cm after a short veg period, so it fits most tents without heavy training.

How much does AK-47 yield?

Serious Seeds lists 350–600 g/m² indoors for AK-47. In its own grow report under 600 W lamps, feminized plants averaged about 103 g of dried bud each, slightly more than the regular plants grown beside them.

What does AK-47 smell like?

AK-47 smells sweet and spicy with citrus, earth and wood. The breeder calls the odor extremely strong during flowering, so indoor growers need a carbon filter. Leafly lists myrcene, pinene and caryophyllene as its main terpenes.

Is AK-47 good for beginners?

Yes. Serious Seeds describes AK-47 as suited to beginners thanks to its short veg, manageable height and quick bloom for a sativa. The main challenge for a first-time grower is containing its strong smell, especially in an apartment or shared space.

AK-47 Fem reminds me of a sweet treat. It’s an uplifting and relaxing smoke that gives me a great body high and keeps me glued to the couch before bed. At the very least, I am no longer stressed, and I can unwind after work. Anti-anxiety medications helped me in the past, but they just took me so far. My psychiatrist was the one who suggested this medicinal marijuana to help me deal with my stress. It turns out that going out into the yard was a perfect choice for me, and this particular weed is exceptionally yummy!

The AK-47 Fem is a pretty intense strain for smokers like me, use this for stress, anxiety, discomfort, and depression as a medical marijuana patient. Gardening improves my mood, and I’m pleased to report that I successfully developed this weed on my first try. The earthy, sweet aroma appeals to me, and the smoking experience is smooth and gentle on the lungs. I feel more pleasant and alert, less depressed and nervous about life now that I’ve opened my mind to new ideas. My girlfriend and I are fond of talking about this good shit! Happy with the outcome!

Me and My colleagues try this often times and we never regret our decision upon using. I used to have some issues like anxiety and migraines, but when I try this one it all goes away. Growing this strain takes a lot of time and effort, i also sis the LST so it awards me a very high yields. I prefer this AK-47 Marijuana for you to try.

    Ron Zamora –

The distribution was extremely fast and effective!!! I cultivated marijuana for the first time and it takes a whole bit of an effort. Not all plants evolved as I wished they would, sadly. Found out that I’ve given so much light to the plants, this comes as a lesson to me, maybe too much enthusiasm. But it always won’t bother me, and I won’t have any regrets!!
